EMDR therapy

  • Are you struggling with past trauma that you feel stuck with?

  • Are you looking for an alternative therapeutic treatment to talk therapy?

  • Are you wondering what this big acronym is all about?!

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an effective treatment for past or present trauma, negative beliefs or life events that we have not yet been able to process, understand or work through.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR allows for your nervous system to do the healing through a guided process using bilateral stimulation which stimulates the right and left hemispheres of the brain. The bilateral stimulation might involve eye movements, self tapping or the use of the buzzers for tactile stimulation. You are in the driver's seat!

While we help to guide you through the EMDR process, you get to decide if you want to stop or keep going. During the reprocessing phase of EMDR, it may get uncomfortable or difficult, however, we would never force or push you past what you feel capable of. We will discuss and practice grounding and resourcing techniques to prepare you beforehand.

DBT therapy

  • Is it challenging to understand and regulate your emotions?

  • Do you find yourself in moments of high distress and feeling unable to function?

  • Are your struggles impacting your closest relationships?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, DBT may be a great fit for you. DBT is rooted in its ability to help clients find a balance between acceptance and change. Sometimes we are faced with situations in life that we cannot change and must accept, and at other times we may need to change a situation or our response to them.

Acceptance and change are achieved through 4 key skill areas including:

Interpersonal effetiveness

Mindfulness

Emotional regulation

Distress tolerance

The mindfulness and distress tolerance skills are most deeply rooted in helping us get through potentially unchangeable situations by helping us to feel better, or at least not feel worse.

The emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills are more geared at helping to facilitate change in either the situation or your response to it which can cause one to feel better or at least prevent sliding into further discomfort.

DBT: An effective approach to therapy

therapy modalities

DBT is an approach that is highly supported by research and has been practised for over two decades. DBT was originally developed by Marsha Linehan to help people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Since its implementation, it has been found to be helpful for many other diagnoses as well, including:

Bipolar disorder

Anxiety

Depression

Trauma & PTSD

Many have also found the work of DBT to be helpful without a need for a formal diagnosis. The focus of a DBT session is to create space for you to share a current or ongoing challenge and to learn effective skills that can help you get through challenging moments with greater resiliency.
