Anxiety counselling: Our approach

Understand your anxiety

We will give you space to be heard about what anxiety feels like for you in your life and how it affects you and your world. Moving too quickly into 'fixing the problem' is not always the best approach for some. Many folks need to first feel fully validated and understood before moving towards learning about coping tools and new ways to approach anxiety in their life.

Build acceptance

We will discuss the importance and value of facing your emotions with acceptance as opposed to denying, minimizing, or shutting them down. When we learn to accept anxiety and steer away from fearing it, we can disarm its energy and find more effective ways to move with and through it. We may draw from various mindfulness-based approaches to start fostering a sense of awareness and acceptance around anxiety.

Mindfulness practice

Some clients might be intimidated by considering meditation or mindfulness practices – so we will always work within your comfort level. Mindfulness is a gentle compliment when applying CBT (next step) or other therapeutic modalities. It allows us to pause, notice, accept and take note of our thoughts to start challenging and reframing the negative thoughts that are no longer serving us.

Three main modalities we use in anxiety therapy

It’s a goal-oriented approach that helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected. When anxiety takes over, it often brings with it a stream of self-critical or fear-based thoughts that can feel overwhelming. In CBT, we’ll gently explore these patterns together and begin to shift toward more balanced and supportive ways of thinking.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

The last modality we use is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps you better understand and respond to your emotions (especially when they feel intense, confusing or overwhelming). EFT is effective for clients dealing with trauma, attachment wounds, or even relationship issues (we use EFT when working with couples as well).

In therapy, we’ll work together to explore the emotional patterns underlying your struggles, strengthen your sense of connection (to yourself and others), and help you feel safer. EFT will help you achieve emotional security and resilience.

This modality is especially helpful when anxiety feels intense and unpredictable. DBT combines elements of mindfulness and emotional regulation to help you navigate overwhelming moments with more steadiness and balance.

In therapy, we’ll build concrete skills that support you in retaking control over your nervous system and responding to anxiety in ways that feel more empowering rather than overwhelming.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Anxiety and trauma

We know that anxiety can also stem from past trauma we have experienced in our lives that has yet to be fully processed and healed.  Some other more trauma-oriented and somatic modalities like EMDR and ART could be helpful approaches to help with treating trauma-related anxiety.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

Helps the brain process and release distressing memories that may be fueling your anxiety.

ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy)

Helps you reduce the emotional intensity of painful experiences that may be contributing to your anxiety now.

How anxiety shows up in the body

Anxiety is more than just stress or nervousness—it’s a mental health condition that can affect how you feel physically. If you often feel on edge, tired, or notice strange body sensations without a clear reason, anxiety might be the cause. Below are four common anxiety disorders and the physical symptoms that may come with them.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

GAD often displays as ongoing, excessive worry about many areas of life (health, work, relationships) even when there’s no immediate danger and things "seem fine". People often describe it as feeling stuck in their heads or being.

Physical symptoms:

  • Racing heart

  • Sweating or trembling

  • Numbness or feeling disconnected

  • Nausea or stomach problems

  • Headaches or muscle tension

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety is a fear of being judged, embarrassed, or rejected in social or performance situations. It’s more than just shyness—it can make everyday things like speaking in a meeting, eating in public, or making small talk feel overwhelming.

Physical symptoms:

  • Blushing or sweating

  • Shaking or shaky voice

  • Fast heartbeat

  • Feeling frozen or wanting to escape

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder causes sudden and intense episodes of fear, known as panic attacks. These often come without warning and may feel like a heart attack or losing control.

Physical symptoms:

  • Chest pain or tightness

  • Trouble breathing or hyperventilating

  • Heart pounding or palpitations

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Chills or hot flashes

Phobias

A phobia is a strong fear of a certain object, situation, or activity—like flying, spiders, or needles. The fear is out of proportion to the actual danger but can still cause a strong physical response.

Physical symptoms:

  • Sudden feeling of panic when exposed to the trigger

  • Sweating or shaking

  • Shortness of breath

  • Urge to run or avoid the situation

If these symptoms sound familiar or are affecting your daily life, know that help is available. Therapy can offer support, tools, and long-term relief from anxiety.
