How do you feel about your relationship right now?

If you are in a relationship, you surely know that even happy relationships take effort. When a relationship is struggling, it’s not always about one big problem. Often, it’s the buildup of many different issues, such as:

•    Unmet needs
•    Miscommunication
•    Past emotional wounds

Many couples find themselves stuck in the same unhelpful or toxic patterns and having difficulty understanding each other. And then, there are bigger issues, such as infidelity, a breach of trust or a traumatic event that you suffered together as a couple.

If any of this seems familiar, you’re not alone in your struggle! And in many cases, all you need is a little support.

Why should you seek couples counselling?

Relationships oftentimes struggle with many different issues and challenges, such as:

  • Lack of closeness and/or respect

  • Affairs or infidelity

  • Conflicts (e.g., over responsibilities at home)

  • Different approaches to raising children

  • External stressors (e.g., health, work, family, etc.)

How couples counselling can help

Couples therapy can provide invaluable support if you're dealing with those (or different) challenges. Working together with a therapist can also provide guidance and healing around helping you as a couple to uncouple, meaning moving forward separately if this is what you have chosen.

Counselling during or after separation can help with co-parenting, communication and grieving the loss of your relationship as you possibly move forward into new relationships.

Relationship counselling: Our approach

When working with clients struggling with relationship issues, we rely on three evidence-based modalities that have helped many of our clients.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples counselling

Emotional disconnection is a serious problem for many couples, especially if you feel like you're not really being seen, heard, or understood. EFT helps couples identify the negative cycles they get stuck in and guides them toward a deeper and more meaningful emotional relationship.

When working with EFT, we’ll explore the deeper emotions that fuel conflict or distance in your relationship. We’ll work on how to express those feelings in ways that promote closeness and mutual understanding instead of pushing each other away. Over time, EFT therapy will help you build trust and safety in your relationship.

The Gottman Method

This approach to couples therapy offers practical tools to improve communication, manage conflict, and deepen friendship and intimacy between you and your partner. When working with the Gottman Method, you'll learn how to recognize patterns that adversely affect your relationship (e.g., criticism, defensiveness, or stonewalling) and replace them with healthier habits (especially listening, responding, and supporting each other).

We’ll also build on your strengths as a couple, helping you benefit from what’s already working in your relationship to help you make your relationship feel more meaningful and secure.

Don’t worry; you don’t need to know the ins and outs of those modalities. It’s our role to select the best therapeutic approach that will help your relationship in the most effective manner. During our first meetings, we’ll discuss the best strategy that’s tailored to your needs and situation.
