Find a safe haven and heal from past trauma

Start trauma therapy in Calgary

Does it feel like your difficult past is still here with you?

Even if the traumatic experience happened to you many years ago (perhaps even in your childhood), trauma may still adversely influence your today's life and functioning. Many of our clients say that trauma robbed them of peace and a sense of safety in their own bodies and minds.

Is this how you feel, too?

•    Are you constantly on edge, hyper-aware or emotionally shut down?
•    Do you feel like you're stuck in the past, unable to move forward no matter how hard you try?
•    Is trauma interfering with your relationships, work or even the ability to enjoy a normal, peaceful life?

 Young Woman Contemplating

That’s what trauma does. It impacts your nervous system, your self-worth, and your ability to feel safe. If this description sounds familiar, you don’t have to deal with this challenge on your own.

The good news is that overcoming past trauma is possible.

Trauma therapy can help you heal from your difficult past and regain joy and stability in life. And it’s our role to help you along the way!

Discover trauma therapy

Why should you try therapy to overcome trauma?

Living with unresolved trauma can feel exhausting and overwhelming. You may find yourself stuck in patterns of fear, shutdown, self-blame, or being constantly on edge.

And the truth is that trauma won’t just go away on its own. Healing takes time, the right approach, and support. This is where our role begins.

How therapy can help?

When providing trauma therapy, we strive to create a 100% safe and supportive space where you can begin to process what’s happened to you and start healing. Trauma counselling always takes place at your own pace so that you feel comfortable with the process. At first, we’ll explore how trauma shows up in your body, emotions, daily functioning and relationships. Then, with the carefully selected therapeutic modalities, we’ll help you let your trauma go.

Trauma counselling: Our approach

When working with clients struggling with trauma, we use two evidence-based modalities that have helped many of our clients. We’re certain they can help you, too!

EMDR for trauma (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

It’s an effective treatment for past or present trauma, negative beliefs or life events that we have not yet been able to process, understand or work through.

EMDR allows your nervous system to heal through a guided process using bilateral stimulation, which stimulates the right and left hemispheres of the brain. The bilateral stimulation might involve eye movements, self-tapping or the use of the buzzers for tactile stimulation.

You are in the driver's seat! While we help to guide you through the EMDR process, you get to decide if you want to stop or keep going. During the reprocessing phase of EMDR, it may get uncomfortable or difficult. However, we would never force or push you past what you feel capable of. We will discuss and practice grounding and resourcing techniques to prepare you beforehand.

ART for trauma (Accelerated Resolution Therapy)

It’s is an innovative, non-invasive, evidence-based psychotherapy that aids in relief from distressing and/or traumatic images, sensations, and memories.

Similarly to EMDR, ART helps clients process distressing memories by using eye movements while visualizing the experience, which often involves reimagining it in a more positive or neutral way. This helps reduce the emotional intensity of your past memories, thus making them feel insignificant.

ART therapy can be used for grief, depression, anxiety, phobias, depression, trauma, pain management, and various other concerns.

ART draws from a combination of techniques, such as EMDR, Gestalt, exposure therapy, guided Imagery, and brief psycho-dynamic therapy. You are welcome to ask us if Accelerated Resolution Therapy may help you on your healing journey.

Don’t worry; you don’t need to know the ins and outs of those modalities. It’s our role to select the best therapeutic approach that will help you process and heal from trauma. During our first meetings, we’ll discuss the best strategy that’s tailored to your needs and situation.
